The question in the title was asked by DerAmi in the diary Living in Maga Land concerning our fellow Citizens who are referred to (correctly IMHO) by President Biden as MAGA Republicans. They refuse to accept the results of any election they lose and are willing to once again use violence to maintain power, just as their predecessors did over 160 years ago.
What we did as a Country after the Civil War of Rebellion was forgive the “traitors of the South” and confine them to their home states. The Northern Forces Abolitionist got rid of slavery however in a little over 10 years they entered into an agreement that they would withdraw Union troops and allow the South to treat their POC like they did before the war if they acknowledged the authority of the United States Government. A compliant Supreme Court maintained this arrangement by ignoring the Constitution. And in exchange the Government got a cold peace, while conveniently ignoring the frequent acts of terrorism that occured (mostly) in the formally occupied territory.
It is now some 50+ years since the doctrine of unenumerated rights put teeth into the 14th and 15th Amendments, ultimately resulting in a black President and BIPOC female Vice President. It also by sheer coincidence drove these decedents of the Rebels out of their collective minds.
Can we confine them. Difficult at best, they occupy land beyond the South (which ironically they got without firing a shot) and control more States then the forces of the Democracy. And they have control of the Supreme Court, which as begun the process of returning us to the pre-Civil Rights era.
However we have the numbers and the industrial might (and if the anger at the reversal of Roe is any indication, we will have the votes) so maybe confinement will not be necessary. And we seem to have a Commander in Chief who has hinted that he is not going to take this anti-Democratic bullsh*t any more:
Biden is asking all Americans to join him in the fight, but he is uniquely positioned to lead the fight. Whether that’s his Justice Department prosecuting Jan. 6 rioters, or pursuing higher ups for the 2020 election subversion, or chasing down classified material at Mar-a-Lago, Biden has already undertaken to thwart some of the most immediate threats.
