Photo Diary: Fort Negley, Nashville

After the Union Army captured Nashville TN in 1862, they built a series of forts around it to defend it. One of these was Fort Negley. In 1864, the Confederate army of General Hood approached Nashville, hoping to draw the Union forces nearby into a decisive battle.  He got his wish, but it didn't turn out as he hoped: the Union forces attacked Hood's army and completely destroyed it, ending the Civil War in this part of the country. Although the Confederates never attacked Fort Negley, the first shots fired at the Confederates in the Battle of Nashville came from the Fort's cannons.
