It wasn’t until I thought back to the early southern Democrats, Ms. Davis’ heroes, that I came to realize how truly splintered our party is.
George Wallace was a Dem. So was Lester Maddox. Is it any wonder, then, that our party has such a hard time coming together on a specific platform? Compared with the time of Abe Lincoln, the Democrats and Republicans have practically reversed roles.
Then it hit me. Well, I hit myself, actually…a hard slap to the forehead. I realized, in my naiveté, that it was never really about Dems vs. GOP. After 150 years, we are still fighting the Civil War!
We are still fighting slavery…we are still fighting wealthy landowners and robber barons. And we are still fighting southern Democrats. If you stop and think about it, the two parties have become so similar in the economic areas of trade and Wall Street, the only differences still separating us are our social programs. These, of course benefit the poor and minorities most. This, in turn, causes blacks and Latinos to vote Democrat, over a vast majority.
It is STILL North vs. South, not Democrat vs, Republican, which causes our biggest divide, as a nation. While there are shining examples of forward-thinking, liberal southerners and dank pockets of ignorant, bigoted northerners, it is still a choice, to which side you identify yourself.
Racist whites, terrified that they will lose their majority stranglehold, will do anything to hinder the rights of minorities…including the right to live! This means gerrymandering, voter suppression and, let’s face it…population control. Is it any wonder that immigration would be such a huge issue for them? Is it surprising that the police have Teflon body armor, as they wipe out black voters with free reign?
And NOW…now, one of them has the uppity audacity to sit in the White House. The freakin’White House! The symbolism is enough to make Robert E. Lee spin in his grave.
For much of the south, a battle was won by the north in 1865, but the war never ended. So, they continue the fight…unfettered gun rights, state-sponsored starvation of minorities, blatant flying of the confederate flag…biding their time, until (1) the Rapture comes and takes them to White Heaven or (2) the race wars begin, allowing them to massacre with impunity.
So, buh-bye, Kim Davis. Your intolerance will serve you well, in the propaganda-infused political ads to come. And know that, if you change your mind and want to come back…we’ve already changed the locks.
