President Trump said in an interview with Smithsonian Magazine that Union General Ulysses S. Grant prevailed in the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg because he was a “totally awesome, believe me.”

"Grant had all those big cannons. I mean big. Like totally big, believe me. Greatest cannons ever,” said Trump in an impromptu disquisition on the Civil War, a subject he heard something about on FOX News recently. “And Grant was great. He was extremely great. He had a great mind. Best mind ever, believe me. His guys killed all those people, right? I mean tons of people. You never saw so many dead people, believe me. And did I mention his cannons?"

Trump seemed to bristle when reminded by a reporter that Grant was actually besieging Vicksburg, Miss., during the Battle of Gettysburg. “That’s fake history, OK? I have my own opinions; you can have your own opinions.”

“What matters is that he won, OK?” said Trump. “And he won by a huge amount. A huge amount. A really large amount. I mean did he win or what?”
